Fancy cars, money and cushy jobs: life is good when you’re the child of an ANC politician

When you’re a high-ranking ANC politician, the world is yours.

By world, I mean taxpayers’ money, and by oyster, I mean corruption.

EFF’s top dogs including Julius Malema and Floyd Shivambu have no problem splashing looted money from VBS Bank on Gucci and other high-end products.

They do everything wrong, however. Maybe it’s down to inexperience – the ANC has had a lot more time to perfect the art of plunder – but what about the next generation, Juju?

The Zondo Commission laid bare how comfortable life is for the children of top ANC officials, with cars, money, apartments and other gifts pouring in.

Ask Rebecca Davis of The Daily Maverick, who has compiled a handy list. We start with Katleho Mokonyane, the daughter of Nomvula Mokonyane [below]our former Minister of Water and Sanitation who flushed billions down the toilet:

It was Bosasa COO Angelo Agrizzi who brought Katleho Mokonyane to the attention of the Zondo Commission.

Agrizzi claimed that as part of Bosasa’s package of bribes to former minister Mokonyane, Bosasa CEO Gavin Watson would rent luxury cars for his daughter when he visits China. , where she studied.

Nomvula claimed her daughter was hired by Bosasa for “holiday work” because she spoke Mandarin. I want my holiday job to hire a “high end vehicle such as [an] Audi A3″ to transport me.

Oh, there’s also the small issue of Katleho’s role as director of Tuwo Rhodesia, a company which the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says has benefited from PPE corruption to the tune of more than one million rand.

Tshepiso Magashule, the son of the one and only Ace, has been nursing this pacifier for a long time. Long ago, when in 2011 he was known to drive a Gupta-owned BMW Z4 thanks to a job his father landed him:

Guptaleaks emails revealed that Tshepiso and his twin brother Thato spent a lavish holiday in 2015 in Dubai at the Gupta Prize. Four years earlier, Tshepiso had made a three-week trip to New York and Venice with the Guptas and Duduzane Zuma…

Tshepiso and his brother were awarded PPE contracts worth R2.7 million by the Free State government in July 2020. Neither was mentioned in the findings of the State Capture report until ‘now.

Ah yes, the man who stands head and shoulders above the rest.

Duduzane, whose impressive costume collection has been put to the test due to his father’s endless court appearances.

His long-term alliance with the Guptas is well known, but further details were revealed in the Guptaleaks’ 2017 emails:

[The leak] helped clarify some details, including that the Guptas had helped Duduzane buy an 18 million rand apartment in Dubai’s Burj Khalifa skyscraper, where he has spent most of the pandemic locked up…

The second part of the state capture report mentioned Duduzane Zuma about Denel, Zondo stating, “Mr. Tony Gupta’s idea was that government officials and public company officials would realize that, through Mr. Duduzane Zuma, he had easy access to Mr. Duduzane Zuma’s father, President Zuma.

Mention should be made of what is arguably Duduzane’s finest interview moment, dating back to 2017. With his father still at the helm, Duduzane told the BBC that he was not “born with a silver spoon in the mouth”. It’s something I had to work for. »

Also receiving honorable mentions in Davis’ article were Andile Ramaphosa, Cyril Ramaphosa’s son, and Thalente Myeni, Dudu Myeni’s son.
