Ship carrying thousands of luxury cars sinks in Atlantic after burning for weeks

A large freighter that was transporting luxury cars from Germany to the United States sank in the mid-Atlantic on Tuesday – nearly two weeks after a fire broke out on board, Portuguese navy officials said.

Officials confirmed that the vessel, Felicity Ace, lost stability and sank approximately 250 miles off the Portuguese Azores Islands while being towed for land. The ship sank in a location outside Portugal’s economic zone in an area nearly 2 miles deep.

In its statement, the Portuguese Navy said only some debris and a small amount of oil were visible where the ship sank and tugs were breaking up the oil slick with hoses.

One of the ships monitoring the Felicity Ace was en route to Ponta Delgada in the Azores to retrieve pollution containment material, Portuguese navy officials said.

The 650ft long vessel is capable of carrying 4,000 cars. It is not known how many vehicles were on board the ship.

European automakers declined to comment on the exact number of cars and models on board the ship, the Associated Press said. reported. However, Porsche customers in the United States were contacted individually by their dealership.

“We are already working to replace each car affected by this incident and the first new cars will be built soon,” Angus Fitton, vice president of public relations at Porsche Cars North America Inc., told the AP.

The Portuguese Navy rescued the 22 crew from the ship, which was due to arrive in Davisville, RI on February 16. The crew was taken by helicopter to the island of Faial in the Azores, the PA reported. None of the crew members were injured.
